As the first weekend of James Beard Foundation’s Taste America® approaches, we’re starting to highlight what’s happening in each of the fantastic food destinations on our tour. First up: the dynamic city of Chicago.


On Friday, September 20, Taste America All-Star Richard Blais will join a lineup of top Midwestern chef talent, including a number of Beard Award winners and nominees, at Chicago’s historic Union Station. Dubbed “Journey through the Great Lakes”, the dinner will highlight the best regional bounty and products, and will kick off with a cocktail reception by the Violet Hour, a 2013 JBF Award nominee for Outstanding Bar Program. JBF Hosts Third Chefs Boot Camp for Policy and Change


More than a dozen chefs from around the country will convene for the James Beard Foundation's third Chefs Boot Camp for Policy and Change at Glynwood in Cold Spring, New York, from September 15-17. The program, which was launched at the James Beard Award–nominated Blackberry Farm in Walland, Tennessee in July 2012, is designed to provide chefs with the tools and support they require to be effective leaders and advocates for food-system change.

When we decided to embark on James Beard Foundation’s Taste America®, a national culinary tour of ten great American cities, there was a lot of discussion about which of our country’s amazing food towns we would go to first. The upshot: ten surefire winners. We asked chefs and food experts in the cities where we’ll be touching down to tell us what makes their hometowns so delicious.

Greenhouse Gallery: Lynn Karlin

Works by Lynn Karlin are now on display in the Greenhouse Gallery of the James Beard House


Located in the reception space where guests mingle and meet before meals in the Beard House dining room, the Greenhouse Gallery exhibits the works of up-and-coming and established artists who work with culinary themes. Now through the end of October, visitors to the gallery can admire photographs by Lynn Karlin. Lynn is an internationally published photographer who specializes in homes and gardens. Originally from New York City, she was the first female staff photographer for Women’s Wear Daily and W. Her work has appeared in House Beautiful, Country Living, the New York Times Magazine, and New York magazine.

Local Dish: Two Weeks Left to Sign Up

The James Beard Foundation's Taste America Local Dish Challenge


Earlier this summer, we announced our upcoming Taste America Local Dish promotion, a national fundraiser for our educational programming and initiatives. How to get involved, you ask? Just visit a participating restaurant, order its official Local Dish, and a dollar from your purchase will be donated to JBF's Taste America Education Drive. Restaurants can join the Local Dish program by signing up here. The promotion officially launches on September 1, which means you have just under two weeks to register.
