JBF Awards Highlights!
We want to thank everyone who made last night's festivities such a huge success. Congrats to all of the winners and nominees!
Here's a highlight reel from our amazing Awards production team at Linton Media. You can see more of their work on our YouTube channel.
Food in Film: Gourmets
From food fights to fava beans and a nice Chianti, here are some more memorable food scenes.
Food in Film: Opening Video
Welcome to the 2013 Beard Awards! This year's theme is Lights! Camera! Taste!: Spotlight on Food & Film. Here are some of our favorite cinematic food moments.
Opening Today: A Place at the Table
Tom Colicchio didn't live-tweet this week's Top Chef finale, but he had a decent excuse: the JBF Award winner was attending the premiere of A Place at the Table, a new documentary about hunger in America, co-directed by his wife, Lori Silverbush, and Kristi Jacobson. The film, which was shown at Sundance, follows three individuals who struggle with food insecurity, and includes commentary from Colicchio, actor Jeff Bridges, author Raj Patel, nutrition policy expert Marion Nestle, and others. A Place at the Table opens today, so have a look at the list of theaters that are showing this important work. Watch the official trailer below:
Video: Peter Chang Returns to the James Beard House
Nearly three years after he was profiled in The New Yorker (subscription required), the famously itinerant Peter Chang seems to have gingerly set down roots. He splits his dinner shifts among three different Chinese restaurants in central Virginia, and though it's said that his exact location on any given night remains anybody's guess, we managed to pin him down for a celebration of the Year of the Snake at the James Beard House. You can watch a short video of Chang working in the kitchen below. A film from his 2012 event can be seen here.
JBF Hits Times Square
JBF has had a strong presence in New York City this year. In May we were honored with an Empire State Building illumination. This month we've headed a few blocks uptown to Times Square, where the snazzy, sky-high Jumbotron will display a short video featuring the Foundation and some of its valued partners through New Year's Day. Watch the clip below, or be sure to look up if you find yourself at the junction of Broadway and Seventh Avenue this holiday season.
Watch Adam Gopnik Speak at the JBF Food Conference
The first day of last week's conference concluded with a brilliant synthesis from Adam Gopnik, a staff writer at The New Yorker and author of The Table Comes First. Watch his presentation below:
Watch Patent Attorney Dan Ravicher Speak at the JBF Food Conference
Last year Public Patent Foundation (PUBPAT), a not-for-profit legal services organization, filed suit on behalf of 60 family farmers, seed businesses, and organic agricultural organizations against Monsanto Company, challenging the corporation's patents on genetically modified seed. (Since the initial filing, the number of plaintiffs has risen to 83.) Dan Ravicher, PUBPAT's executive director and counsel to the plaintiffs in the case, which is now known as Organic Seed Growers & Trade Association, et al. v. Monsanto, spoke at our food conference last week. Watch:
