Last month we announced the winners of our America Cooks with Chefs competition, in which six ordinary Americans—with the help of JBF Award–winning chefs—cooked a delicious meal with fewer than 800 calories for the Clinton Health Matters Annual Activation Summit. The conference judges crowned Victoria Phillips and her chef, Tony Mantuano of Chicago's acclaimed Spiaggia, as the winners.

Join Us at the Kids Food Festival Next Weekend!


 

The James Beard Foundation is a proud partner of the Kids Food Festival, running next Saturday and Sunday at the Bank of America Winter Village in New York City’s Bryant Park. Presented by the Creative Kitchen, the weekend will be packed with fun and engaging activities dedicated to educating families about making balanced food choices that foster lifelong wholesome eating. Little epicures and their parents can attend hands-on cooking classes in the James Beard Foundation Future Foodies Pavilion, where renowned chefs like Daniel Holzman, Jehangir Mehta, and Bill Telepan will share their recipes, skills, and love for all things culinary. Our own Izabela Wojcik and Victoria Jordan will bring James Beard to a new generation by hosting a class and demonstrating the recipe for his famous shortcakes with apple–pear compote.

Reel Food Media Contest Announces Finalists

 

A snail farmer in Vienna. Growing beneficial begs. Humane meat processing. These are just a few of the subjects explored in the ten short films that have reached the final round of the 2015 Real Food Media Contest. You can now watch the ten finalists on the competition's website, as well as vote for the People's Choice Award. (The James Beard Foundation is one the contest's official media partners, and JBF president Susan Ungaro, along with Tom Colicchio, Michael Pollan, and other food-system advocates, will judge the final films and select the grand price winner.)

 

Last year's winning film, Homeward, documented a cooperative of oregano farmers in the Mexican state of Hidalgo. Watch it above.

Presenting the Sun of Zimm, an Andrew Zimmern/eyebobs Collaboration

James Beard Award winner Andrew Zimmern

 

You likely already know Andrew Zimmern from his adventurous, no-bite-left-uneaten Travel Channel series Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern and Bizarre Foods America. He's also a two-time JBF Award winner, nabbing our Outstanding Personality/Host award in 2010 and again in 2013. 

 

Beyond his work and achievements in entertainment, Zimmern is also a valued contributor to the JBF Scholarship Program. In 2014, through a collaboration with eyebobs eyewear, Andrew launched his "Second Chances Scholarship," which is awarded to a promising, aspiring student who has faced and conquered extreme challenges.

America Cooks with Chefs

 

Earlier this week, in La Quinta, California, America Cooks with Chefs arrived at its exciting conclusion: six participants, all ordinary Americans, competed in a live competition at the Clinton Health Matters Annual Activation Summit. The challenge? Prepare and serve a delicious meal with fewer than 800 calories. Our lucky contestants had a bit of help: before the competition, each was paired with a JBF Award–winning chef, who welcomed their respective trainees into their restaurant kitchens and taught them their recipes, with some healthy cooking tips on the side. It's time for the final phase of America Cooks with Chefs, our healthy cooking competition in partnership with the Clinton Foundation. We've paired six ordinary Americans from across the country with JBF Award–winning chefs, who have equipped our contestants with nutritious recipes and valuable cooking tips for healthier lifestyles. With stops in Chicago, Miami, and La Quinta, California in the books, America Cooks with Chefs now heads to Los Angeles for its fourth episode. In this seven-part cooking competition, contestants go behind the scenes at a James Beard Award–winning chef’s restaurant to learn tips, tricks, and advice for cooking more nutritious meals. The participants will also attend the 2015 Clinton Health Matters Initiative (CHMI) conference in California, where they will demonstrate their new skills in a live cooking challenge judged by a panel of celebrities.

America Cooks with Chefs: Episode Two

 

Hot on the heels of our first episode, America Cooks with Chefs returns this week with its second installment. Each episode will follow one contestant as they go behind the scenes at a James Beard Award-winning chef’s restaurant to learn tips, tricks, and advice for cooking more nutritious meals.

 

Episode two follows Michael Angelo Gonzalez, a Miami native who loves his family’s African American and Cuban traditional foods, but is coming to understand that their diet is harming their health. Michael wants to make a change: he wants to learn budget-friendly cooking techniques so that he can continue to cook the foods his family loves, but in a healthier way.
