JBF to Partner with Food+Tech Connect's Dining Hackathon

In the age of Uber and Taskrabbit, it’s only natural that the brains of Silicon Valley would want to tackle the larger issues of how and what we eat. After its wildly successful Hack//Meat events in California and New York, Food+Tech Connect is shifting its focus on innovation to the realm of the restaurant with Hack//Dining NYC.

The weekend hackathon, organized by Food+Tech Connect in collaboration with Applegate, Google, Chipotle, and Studio Industries, will take place June 27–29 at General Assembly in New York City. Over the course of three days, chefs, engineers, executives, designers and data scientists will develop and test open-source software and hardware to tackle industry-wide challenges in areas of Sustainable Sourcing, Wellness, Food Safety, and Operations. JBF’s executive vice president Mitchell Davis will return as an advisor to the hackathon teams, which will compete... Read more >

James Beard Welcomes Dinova, A Deeper Connection to Corporate Dining

James Beard Welcomes Dinova, A Deeper Connection to Corporate Dining

Business diners often bring a unique perspective to the dinner table: some gatherings are set in the name of team building. Others are planned under the sales and account-management halo. Sometimes two colleagues dine together for a mix of business and personal conversation. Regardless of what inspires these guests to eat together, there’s no question that work and food share a fruitful relationship: a great meal can help to cement a new business deal, while business travelers and corporate events play a key role in the health of the restaurant industry.

Thanks to Dinova, a new James Beard Foundation partner, the intersection of dining and business is growing even more productive. Working directly with many of America’s largest corporate brands, Dinova steers professionals and business travelers to its growing nationwide network of restaurants. Dinova has more than 10,000 establishments on its roster... Read more >

As one of the contest's official media partners, we're helping to spread the word about their open call for entries. JBF president Susan Ungaro is also serving as a judge along with Tom Colicchio, Michael Pollan, and other food-system advocates. From the RFMC website:

James Beard House Hosts Guests of the International Visitor Leadership Program

The International Visitor Leadership Program at the James Beard House

America's soft power got a lot tastier when the Department of State launched its Diplomatic Culinary Partnership in 2012. Created through a collaboration with JBF, the initiative elevates the role of culinary engagement in America’s formal and public diplomacy efforts, and enlists chefs from across the country to serve as resources to the Department when engaging foreign audiences.

One of the many facets of our ongoing partnership with the State Department, the International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) is a professional exchange program that advances U.S. foreign policy goals by increasing mutual understanding between the people of the United States and those of other countries. One of IVLP's current projects is an exchange with six participants from the Middle East and North Africa, who are exploring the impact of... Read more >

JBF to Celebrate the Tenth Anniversary of Meatless Monday

Peggy Neu and Sid Lerner of the Monday Campaigns

When Meatless Monday launched ten years ago, the campaign had a modest goal: encourage Americans to eat slightly less meat. Based on the notion that people are more determined to reprogram their habits at the beginning of the week, the group has steadily racked up victories and adherents: the growing trendiness of plant-based diets, the support of celebrity chefs and other stars, and Sodexo, a major institutional food supplier, designing meat-free programs for its clients.

But even in this dawning era of the cauliflower steak, America’s meat-heavy diet... Read more >
