By now you've probably heard all about last week's JBF Award nominee announcement in Charleston, South Carolina. But the excitement didn't stop there: after the reading of the names, we headed over to the historic Fort Moultrie for a Friends of James Beard Benefit, which was hosted by our partners at the Charleston Area Convention & Visitors Bureau, Patrick Properties, and the BB&T Charleston Wine & Food Festival. Sean Brock, Mike Lata, Robert Stehling, Craig Deihl, and other local powerhouses collaborated on a multi-course menu that paid tribute to Lowcountry cuisine. A former JBF scholarship recipient who trained at Le Madri, Pippa Calland is now top toque at Villetta in Santa Monica, where she delivers impeccable Italian-inflected California cuisine. For this ode to Italy’s Piedmont region, Calland has designed an ingredient-driven menu that will feature Sabatino Tartufi truffles and acclaimed Michele Chiarlo wines.

The incredibly talented chefs collaborating on this innovative dinner are at the forefront of the new, high-voltage Vegas cuisine, serving modern, inspired, sophisticated, and luxurious food to discerning Sin City diners. Join them for a spectacular dinner benefitting the Jean-Louis Palladin Professional Work/Study Grant and honoring the late, great Jean-Louis Palladin.

For the past three years, we’ve recognized Charles Roman, an alum of Philadelphia’s Le Bec-Fin and Vetri, as a JBF
Eye Candy: Cheese Illustrated
We adored these cheese sketches (complete with accoutrements) that graced the cheese platters at Chelsea Market Sunday Supper. Diners referred to the illustrations to identify the various farmstead cheeses that were served during the meal. (JBF Award winner Anne Quatrano prepared the accompaniments.)
