Because I’m a former political speechwriter, I’m geeking out backstage before the awards begin… watching them edit TelePrompTer copy, listening to Jean-Georges Vongerichten run his lines for the award he’ll be announcing, and staring at the medals and the envelopes containing the winners’ names.
Our favorite culinary stars are arriving on the red carpet, tonight’s featured chefs are setting up for the reception, and our team of guest bloggers is gearing up for the festivities.

We've just wrapped up the Broadcast Media Awards segment of the program—just in time for Karen DeMasco's white chocolate panna cotta with morello cherries and cherry sorbet. Highlight: a humbled and flattered Andrew Zimmern, upon accepting his award for TV Food Personality, gave a shout-out to Cookbook-Hall-of-Fame inductee Claudia Roden. "Claudia, you write about eyeballs and sheep testicles, and that's where I always like to start eating!" he declared.

After an opening video montage that included footage from our Jeopardy! appearance,
Susan Ungaro took the stage at the JBF Media & Book Awards to thank our sponsors and lead the packed room in a Stella toast. She then introduced hosts Andrew Zimmern and Kelly Choi—the latter a vision in peak-of-the-season strawberry red—who took over the podium and launched into the first cookbook awards of the night. Early winners included Real Cajun
by NOLA hero Donald Link ("I wrote this book for my kids," he said) and Ad Hoc at Home
by Thomas Keller. Always a class act, chef Keller saluted fellow nominee Marco Canaro,
and also confessed that he hadn't expected to come out ahead of Judith Jones, whose book, The Pleasures of Cooking for One
," was also up for consideration.
