John Andrews: A Farmhouse Restaurant, South Egremont, MA

Dan Smith has been the chef-owner of John Andrews Farmhouse in the Berkshires of Western Mass. since 1990, creating regional cuisine for close to 25 years, long before farm-to-table was a trend. Smith studied agriculture at Iowa State University and then worked at Villa Pescatore, The Ritz-Carlton and Michael’s Bar and Grill in Naples, Fla. In 1988, Smith began working at the Ragamont Inn in Salisbury, Conn., and fell in love with the Berkshires. He took a position at what was then Sebastian’s Restaurant in South Egremont, Mass., and in 1990 purchased the restaurant and renamed it John Andrews. Smith's longstanding connection to local food is rooted in his farm experiences and is the starting point for his menus. He partners with regional food producers and created a garden on the restaurant property. Since 2010, Smith has presented annual dinners at the James Beard Foundation with a team of Berkshire chefs and will be cooking his first solo dinner in April 2015. In recent years, John Andrews Farmhouse was selected as one of the World’s 25 Best Farmstead Experiences by The Daily Meal, has been awarded the Trip Advisor Certificate of Excellence and the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence.
