This summer, you likely spent long, hot afternoons sipping on margaritas, palomas, and other tequila-based libations. Now that fall is in full swing, it’s time to decide on a new seasonal spirit. We’re turning once again to James Beard Award winner and cocktail virtuoso Jim Meehan, who recommends, well, more tequila. Meehan insists that the warm flavor profiles of aged bottlings pair perfectly with your favorite autumnal ingredients.

Take, for instance, his recipe for the Witch’s Kiss, which is essentially a fall-themed riff on the margarita formula. Meehan swaps in reposado tequila instead of the typical blanco variety, lemon juice replaces lime, and Liquore di Strega (Italian for “Witch’s Liqueur”) brings the sweetness in place of triple sec. To top it off, a bit of apple butter emphasizes the cocktail’s autumnal ethos before it’s shaken up and served up in a chilled coup. Get the recipe and make a seasonal, spirited point at your next cocktail party.
