Sustainable Seafood Partnerships
JBF’s Sustainable Seafood Partnership leverages the expertise of seafood purveyors who are committed to offering sustainable seafood options and are willing to serve as public advocates for sustainable seafood in the market.
Partnering with JBF provides seafood purveyors with access to chefs and other restaurant professionals, facilitating a direct conversation about what each side of the industry needs to promote sustainable seafood to drive true cultural change.
How do Sustainable Seafood Partners support JBF’s work?
Partners explore a variety of wild and farmed species to increase the diversity and health of the seafood supply chain. They attend relevant industry events and public forums across the country, including JBF Sustainable Seafood Issue Summits and JBF Culinary Labs focused on sustainable seafood and fish. These events provide an opportunity for partners to engage chefs in a conversation about the issues and offer hands-on experiential learning opportunities, including fish butchery and seafood tastings. Partners also participate in conference calls facilitated by JBF staff and attended by both seafood partners and Smart Catch participating chefs.
The following purveyors have pledged early support to the initiative by becoming Sustainable Seafood Partners:
- Australis Barramundi nurtures young fish in land-based nurseries, then graduates them to free-swimming offshore net pens, leveraging the minimal environmental impact of barramundi.
- Blue Ocean Mariculture farms Hawaiian Kanpachi in the ocean off Hawaii Island, operating a fully integrated mariculture facility that eliminates capture pressure on wild fish populations.
- Skuna Bay, founded in 2011, craft-raises salmon in a natural ocean environment off Vancouver Island and stores fish in recyclable packaging during transport.
- Verlasso pioneers new aquaculture traditions in Chilean Patagonia, producing farm-raised salmon and practicing consistent harvesting, processing, and delivery.
What criteria is used to evaluate the sustainability of seafood options?
Sustainability criteria are based on wild and farmed seafood production and includes the health and abundance of fish stocks and impacts on the surrounding environment. Seafood ratings are powered by Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch Program and NOAA Fish Stock Sustainability Index.
How are Sustainable Seafood Partners selected?
Sustainable Seafood Partners must offer products with a Seafood Watch rating of “Yellow” or better and be willing to contribute to discussions on critical issues related to sustainable seafood in a public forum.
Why are all current Sustainable Seafood Partners aquaculture companies?
JBF’s Sustainable Seafood Partnership program recently launched, so forming partnerships with a diverse group of seafood purveyors will be an ongoing process—the program is open to any and all seafood purveyors who meet the criteria described above. JBF seeks to expand its seafood partnerships to include a cross-section of suppliers and producers representing every aspect of the sustainable seafood industry.
