Salinger’s Sling

Erika Joyner

Butcher and the Rye - Pittsburgh

Butcher and the Rye, a 2015 semifinalist for JBF Outstanding Bar Program Award created this tasty riff on the Old Fashioned cocktail. Spicier and more complex than its inspiration, this tipple sips as an ode to the era in which Salinger penned his famous novel.

Ingredients

  • 2 ounces Bulleit Bourbon
  • 1/2 ounce Grand Marnier
  • 1/4 ounce demerara syrup*
  • 2 dashes coffee bitters
  • Orange twist for garnish

Method

Combine all ingredients in a mixing glass and stir quickly with large ice cubes. Strain over a large ice cube in a chilled Old Fashioned glass.

Twist the orange peel into a spiral (this brings out the essential oils), rub over the rim of the glass, and place on top of the beverage.

*To make demerara syrup, combine 2 parts cane sugar and 1 part water in a small saucepan. Simmer over low heat, stirring occasionally, until sugar dissolves. Transfer to an airtight container and store in the refrigerator for up to 1 month.
