A Nigerian Independence Day Celebration featuring James Beard Award Semifinalists
In commemoration of Nigerian Independence Day, chef Ope Amosu of Houston’s ChòpnBlọk and sommelier Femi Oyediran of Charleston, South Carolina’s Graft Wine + Cider Bar are teaming up for a spectacular collaboration that showcases vibrant, soulful West African cuisine paired with a unique selection of under-the-radar bottles.
Chef Amosu, a 2025 James Beard semifinalist® for Best Chef: Texas, founded Houston’s ChòpnBlọk to make West African cuisine more accessible to the masses. His concept has earned national recognition for its modern approach to traditional flavors, including standout dishes like the Golden Bowl— smoky jollof jambalaya layered with coconut curry and sweet plantains—as well as reimagined Nigerian street food staples. Oyediran, a 2025 James Beard semifinalist® for Outstanding Professional in Beverage Service, will curate the beverage selection following the approach he‘s honed at Graft: an approachable yet eclectic global wine list highlighting small producers and emerging wine regions.

All reservations are non-refundable and must be made in advance. Should the event be cancelled due to any unforeseen circumstances, JBF will offer a range of options, including ticket exchanges, the option to donate tickets, or a full refund. Tickets to events held at Platform at Pier 57 by the James Beard Foundation cover the cost of food, education and a unique dining experience. Meals are prepared by culinary masters from all regions of the United States and around the world.
