Reel Food: Chefs Boot Camp for Policy and Change

 

We all know and love the celebrity chef. Now it's time to meet a new culinary breed: the chef advocate.

 

The James Beard Foundation's Chefs Boot Camp for Policy and Change provides a unique opportunity for civically and politically minded chefs to become more effective leaders for food-system change. During thematic retreats around the country, participants attend advocacy and media workshops while learning about important issues, challenges, and opportunities in their industry.

The Good Food Org Guide, developed by Food Tank and the James Beard Foundation

 

The James Beard Foundation and its friends at Food Tank are proud to announce the release of the Good Food Org Guide, a comprehensive directory of nonprofits that are working toward a better food system. Culled by experts in food, health, and agriculture, as well as past James Beard Leadership Award recipients, the list consists of more than 400 national and state-based organizations whose missions support improved nutrition, food justice, sustainability, and other causes. Our national epicurean tour, James Beard Foundation’s Taste America®, has been making stops all across the country this fall for fantastic, food-filled weekends. One of our favorite sips at these events has been the world-renowned Old Cuban. Invented by famed bartender Audrey Saunders during her tenure at New York City's Bemelmans Bar, the drink was specifically crafted with BACARDÍ 8 Años rum as its base, and is now recognized as a modern classic. James Beard Foundation's Taste America® Preview: San Francisco

 

We’re down to the final stops of our national epicurean tour, James Beard Foundation’s Taste America®. This weekend we visit San Francisco for two days of star-studded events featuring Taste America All-Star and James Beard Award winner Paul Qui and local star and James Beard Award winner Michael Mina. Join us Friday night for a reception with dishes from some of the city’s hottest chefs, followed by a unique four-course menu prepared by Qui and Mina. On Saturday Qui will show off his technique with a cooking demo at Sur La Table, where you’ll also be able to sample local fare with a cooking demo and book signing from Lissa Doumani and Hiro Sone of Urchin Bistrot, and free tastings from artisan vendors Awesome Bars and Dandelion Chocolate.

Ask Michael Pollan, a prolific food writer and journalist who introduced issues like sustainable agriculture and food safety into the national conversation, about his earliest gustatory memories, and he singles out an after-school snack: “I remember going to a friend’s house in the fourth grade. His mom wasn’t home so he had to figure out how to cook his own food, and he taught me how to scramble eggs,” Pollan says, recalling a childhood in suburban Long Island. “This goop turned into beautiful yellow curds. So my sense of cooking as this kitchen chemistry set where amazing transformations happen goes back pretty far,” he adds.
