Greenhouse Gallery Guidelines

Gallery Mission:

To foster up-and-coming and established artists whose works reflect culinary themes; to provide artists with a gallery space to show their work while enhancing the mood and ambience of the Greenhouse for James Beard events; and to further the Foundation’s mission to celebrate, nurture, and preserve America’s diverse culinary heritage and future.

General Criteria for Exhibiting Work:

  • Food-related subject matter: e.g. ingredients, prepared foods and beverages, culinary scenes/vignettes, marketplaces, kitchen scenes, culinary Americana, and so forth.
  • Displayable medium: any medium is accepted, as long as we can hang it. This is not an appropriate venue for sculpture, video installation, performance art, or non-hanging three-dimensional objects.
  • Content: since the gallery functions primarily as a reception/dining space at the Beard House, we have to maintain a balance between showcasing fine art and showcasing art that is tasteful. We will use our discretion in determining if the artwork is suitable for the Foundation’s purposes.

Specifics About the Gallery:

  • The gallery is located in the Greenhouse of the James Beard House. There are two white exhibit walls available for hanging art.
  • Each show lasts two months, as determined by the curator.
  • The artist is responsible for getting the work to the gallery, displaying it using artist’s own materials, and taking down the work at the end of the show.
  • The artist is responsible for providing the curator with an inventory list of the work to be displayed, as well as any display materials with artist information, statement, and pricing.
  • The artist is responsible for insuring the work and providing JBF with the policy information.
  • Prior to the show, JBF will promote the exhibit in an issue of Beard Bites, our biweekly electronic newsletter, which reaches over 13,000 members and interested foodies nationwide.
  • If an artist wishes to host an opening party or a special event to promote the show, the artist may correspond directly with our event manager, who can outline the details. This would be considered a private event outside the Beard House regular calendar of events and would be subject to various fees.
  • The gallery functions primarily as a reception space and dining room. Guest lists are compiled in advance and there is security at the door. As a result, artwork sales are rare. The artist should consider a greenhouse gallery exhibition an opportunity for exposure rather than commerce.

Fees:

  • The gallery space is complimentary to scheduled artists.
  • The James Beard Foundation would appreciate a 10% donation of any sales of the work from the exhibit. However, any inquiries fielded by the curator regarding the artist or the exhibit will be forwarded directly to the artist.
  • The artist will cover any costs incurred in transporting the work, mounting the work, and providing appropriate insurance to cover the work.
  • The James Beard Foundation will incur costs regarding regular maintenance of the gallery.

Privileges:

  • The artist can invite guests and media to see the work during business hours, by appointment with the curator.
  • During the duration of the artist's exhibit, the James Beard Foundation invites the artist and one guest (2 total) to the reception-only portion of events at the Beard House. This is a complimentary invitation for hor d’oeuvres and a beverage. It is offered on a limited basis and will be determined by the curator.
  • The James Beard Foundation, at the curator’s discretion, will extend the member price to the artist and one guest (2 total) for events at the Beard House during the duration of the exhibit.
