James Beard on Keeping Christmas Simple

 

‘Tis the season! The season of James Beard’s favorite foods, that is—the country hams cut into salty slivers, the piping hot oyster stews with plenty of hot buttered toast, the Champagne sipped with a connoisseur’s glee, the caviar he couldn’t get enough of, the homemade pates, the plum puddings, the mincemeat, and, yes, even the fruitcakes. Bits and pieces of Beard’s childhood always emerged at their warmest and most expansive in his writings about the Christmas holidays, but another theme also ran through and true—simplicity. For as much as Beard loved life in the larger-than-life lane that corresponded with his physical scale and theatrical impulses, deep down he never lost sight of the fact that less is genuinely more. James Beard Foundation's Taste America® Preview: New York

 

James Beard Foundation’s Taste America® comes home to New York City this weekend with two food-filled exclusive events featuring Taste America Honorary All-Star Daniel Boulud and local star and James Beard Award Winner April Bloomfield. Friday night kicks off with a special four-course collaborative dinner cooked up by Boulud and Bloomfield. On Saturday Bloomfield will show off her technique with a cooking demo at Sur La Table, where you’ll also be able to sample local fare with free tastings from artisan vendors Tumbador Chocolate and Katchkie Farm.

Known for her signature blend of Middle Eastern, Armenian, and Mediterranean cuisines, Zov Karamardian runs an empire of restaurants, bistros, and bakeries in Southern California. For this special Friends of James Beard Benefit, Karamardian has crafted a vibrant menu of her legendary fare and will present it along with cooking demonstrations with featured guest and television star Carla Hall. The event will be emceed by JBF Award winner Sherry Yard.
